SEOUL, South Korea -- Top-ranked Lee Westwood rallied to win the Ballantine's Championship for his second straight victory, shooting a 5-under 67 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Westwood, the English star who won the Asian Tour's Indonesian Masters last week to regain the No. 1 spot in the world, finished at 12-under 276 at Blackstone Resort in the event sanctioned by the European and Asian tour and Korea PGA.

"It's always nice when you're world No. 1 to show everybody why you're in that position," Westwood said. "I'm delighted with the way I played this week."

The 47-year-old Jimenez, Westwood's European Ryder Cup teammate and dining companion Saturday night, parred the final nine holes for a 71.

"I was just happy he didn't make a birdie and make it difficult for me," said Westwood, who finished about an hour before Jimenez. "It's very nerve-racking when you have to sit there and somebody's got some holes to play."

Westwood shot a 69 in the completion of the rain-delayed third round to begin the finale three strokes behind Jimenez, Alexander Noren and Rhys Davies. Westwood birdied Nos. 14 and 15 to tie Jimenez, then pulled ahead with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

"It was an old man's performance, really," Westwood said. "I hung around all week, then today when I needed to do anything I just gauged my way through the field and, obviously, got my head in front on the line."

Westwood won for the first time on the European Tour since the 2009 Dubai World Championship and matched Sam Torrance for ninth place on the tour's victory list with 21. The 38-year-old Westwood has 35 worldwide victories.

South Korea's Park Sang-hyun eagled the final hole for a 69 to finish third at 10 under. American Dustin Johnson was fourth at 9 under after a 69.

Noren had a 74 to tie for fifth at 8 under, while Davies shot a 77 to drop into a tie for 13th at 5 under.

No. 1 Wozniacki wins third title of 2011 (AP)

Posted by The Popular News Today on Saturday, April 16, 2011

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Caroline Wozniacki was happy to win her first clay-court tournament of the season at the Family Circle Cup. That didn’t keep the world’s No. 1 player from looking ahead to a major prize—the French Open.

Wozniacki ended a satisfying week here with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Vesnina on Sunday. It also marks her as one of the favorites when the clay-court season ends in two months at Roland Garros.

“I feel confident and I know I can win a (Grand) Slam (tournament),” Wozniacki said.

She showed that in capturing her third tournament of the season. She lost only one set in her five matches, in the quarterfinals to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and took out former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in straight sets to reach the finals here for the second time in five years.

The unseeded Vesnina, ranked 56th in the world, attempted to break Wozniacki’s rhythm by going for the midcourt sidelines instead of hitting deep into the corners. But Wozniacki was up for that, too, easily chasing most of them down.

“I mean sometimes you feel like she’s everywhere on the court,” Vesnina said.

The top-seeded Dane broke her opponent to grab a 3-1 lead in the opening set. Vesnina held strong in the second set, but again Wozniacki broke her serve for a 5-3 lead. Minutes later, Wozniacki had claimed the title. She also won at Dubai and Indian Wells, Calif.

Wozniacki pumped her fist after the final point, waved and blew kisses to the stadium court crowd. She was glad to finally come away with the championship after coming close the previous two years.

Wozniacki lost to Sabine Lisicki in the 2009 finals, then rolled her ankle in the semis a year ago and had to withdraw.

“This has always been a great tournament for me,” she said.

Wozniacki earned $111,000 for her first Family Circle Cup crown. She couldn’t stay long to celebrate, however, since she had a flight to catch later Sunday because of a scheduled exhibition match in Monaco.

Vesnina left with a title as well. After finishing her match with Wozniacki, she teammed with Sania Mirza to take the Family Circle’s doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Sahughnessy. Vesnina also won the doubles crown in Indian Wells last month as Wozniacki took the singles title.

Vesnina had beaten four seeded opponents to reach the title game. But she sounded like all of Wozniacki’s opponents this week as she marveled at the Dane’s play. Wozniacki, Vesnina says, balances pace and brains to come out on top.

“It’s not like she was like Serena, you know, powerful play,” Vesnina said. “Caroline, she’s using pace. She’s using the whole court and she’s playing smart tennis.”

The kind that earns someone their first Grand Slam?

Wozniacki’s not counting on anything yet.

“It’s all about getting everything together,” she said. “The draw has to fit, I have to play well for two weeks, things like that all have to work together.”
