There is confusion out there as to the legitimate role of modern PMC firms such as Xe Services LLC (formerly Blackwater), DynCorp, & Triple Canopy. Some people like to toss around terms like corporate armies while others will bluntly refer to them as mercenaries. There is no doubt that the skill sets required of PMCs and the nature of the services they provide make them subjects of scrutiny and ongoing debate, and the fact that they are making use of high level military training, outside of national military context, in a for-profit model, makes some people a little uneasy. Be that as it may, private military contractor jobs are an estimated 100 billion dollar a year industry.

What should be made clear is that the active involvement of for-hire personnel in a war zone is not considered legitimate; as such, PMCs who take an active role in a conflict are considered illegal combatants in the eyes of the United Nations. In this respect at least the terms corporate army and mercenary are not entirely accurate.

What do private military contractor jobs typically entail?

## Security details

Often PMCs, also known as PSCs (private security contractors) are hired to provide security to valuable and/or strategic installations in dangerous, unstable parts of the world. They are also used to guard and escort important individuals such as heads of corporations and government officials from place to place.

## Operational/tactical support

The skill sets contained on a typical PMC resume make these folks outstanding prospects as tactical and/or strategic consultants. While expressly prohibited from active, direct involvement in a conflict the breadth of highly specific practical experience makes them extremely valuable even in a purely operational role.

## Special forces training

PMCs are frequently contacted to share their highly developed skills in a instructional capacity. PMCs serve all over the globe, training police and security forces along with special forces for militaries worldwide.

## Providing humanitarian aid

Able to react faster than national armed forces, for obvious reasons, Private military contractors are occasionally brought in to offer aid, support, and peace keeping in disaster zones.

Motivated individuals with high levels of special forces experience still have a role to play in the security and stability of unstable parts of the world by way of private military contractor jobs and security jobs overseas.
