Being a fairly difficult fish to hook, carps have become a favorite catch of many anglers in Europe and are slowly becoming popular in the US. In the US and in New Zealand, among other countries, carps are seen as harmful to the habitat of native fishes and other wildlife. Many of the anglers that catch carps for sport think that if carp fishing will become more popular, the carp population will be kept in check lessening their harmful effect to the environment. Not only will the sport become more popular but so will the perception of people towards the carp species.

Carp as a sport fish is already well known among European anglers. Because of the fish's reputation of growing into giants in favorable conditions and being difficult to catch, carp fishing has become the fastest growing angling market in the UK. The sales of carp tackle is consistently up in this part of the world.

Unlike in the UK, carp fish still has a negative image in the US. The angling communities though are embracing them as a good catch. They do this through sport fishing events in carp populated areas in their river systems.

Similar to the carp popularity phenomenon in the US, the Canadians are beginning to enjoy angling carps. This is due to the difficulty of good fly fishing enthusiasts of catching this particular fish. In places like New Zealand where the species have been carelessly introduced, they are labeled as a danger to the local habitat. In these places, anglers are not allowed to return the fish if they caught it.

To try out your luck as a carp angler, first you must know the successful carp rigs find a place near you where carps grow large. They are known to breed successfully in slow moving areas of rivers. Many anglers also caught carp in brackish waters where the salinity is still tolerable for the fish. In general though, they are known thrive in bodies of slow moving freshwater.
