If the painter has his or her canvas, an interior designer has the "bones". The bones, otherwise known as the structure is the space with all its architectural and structural components. The bones dictates the limits, supplies the technical specifications to, presents the issues to and gives an opportunity for the interior designer to employ his or her skills and artistic abilities to come up with an interior design solution for a specific project.

Upon seeing the present layout, the current location of the doors and windows, stairs and walls to name a few, the designer examines what to remove and retain. He or she is aware though that removing anything from the existing bones is both a laborious and expensive task. That said it is more practical to just retain what are currently there. Then again, retention is likewise equivalent to restriction. Even so, both options are made available as not only do they come with disadvantages but they similarly have their own share of benefits to offer a designer.

If the designer decides to retain the elements presently found in the structure, what are the possibilities he or she can explore? The following are some examples. There are the large windows which basically exist to provide natural ventilation. But besides that, they similarly offer a good view of the outdoors. Framing the beauty of what's outside is very relaxing to the senses to say the least. Some spaces feature a dramatic staircase too. That attractive element never fails to catch anyone's attention upon entry. In addition, there are spaces which have period details, modern construction elements and other peculiarities that make them unique. The very existence of these things sends the message that they're best they way they have been found.

To balance things out, let's now discuss the option of removing certain elements which are found in the existing structure. Most often than not, there will be flaws, major and minor. At times, it's easy to conceal them. One way to do that is by means of repeating them in order to make their presence seem intentional. Another way is to hide them by of installing a new wall, building cabinets, placing furniture or adding mirror accents among others. The designer only has to keep in mind though that other than time and budget constraints in addition to the owner's preferences, for safety purposes, it is best to first engage in a consultation with the engineers prior to pushing through with any plan to modify the existing structure.

All things considered, it is basically all about identifying the advantages and disadvantages that the bones as it is gives to a designer. An effective interior design solution is a result of cleverly enhancing what's existing, getting rid of the problematic details and adding elements as necessary if only to emphasise interesting features, address flaws and improve the way a certain caters to the needs and aspirations of the users who conduct their activities in it be it related to work, rest or leisure.
