There are two ways to prepare for a career in interior design. One is to work under an established designer as an apprentice. The other is to study for a degree at an accredited school. There are college degrees that take up to four years. There are also professional designer schools, which take a designated number of years.

Preparation can be taken to an even higher level by doing both. Gain a degree or certification first and then secure an apprenticeship to gain the on-the-job experience. An individual should begin with artistic talent, creativity and an interest in beautifying inner space in a home or store.

That inner space can be the home of the client. In this case, the design will be personalized to suit the homeowner. Working together they will work out a color theme and a plan of what furniture and accents please that client. While the designer makes suggestions, the final results will reflect more of the homeowners preferences. It is the designers job to develop those preferences into a cohesive whole.

If a couple is having a new home built, they may want input on the floor plan, size of rooms and other basic details. It is possible to start a job after the construction is finished. When a complete renovation is being done, the job might begin with analyzing the existing structure before any tear-down is started.

There are also positions available to work for an established firm of interior designers. Being an employee assures one of being covered by health insurance and having steady work. A designer can freelance and be reimbursed on a project-by-project basis. This requires searching for and obtaining new projects. The freelancer will need a professional tax preparer, insurance coverage and possibly an attorney on retainer.

A person interested in art and color and blending them to create beauty is interested in doing this creative work. There is great variety. For example, it can be working inside a private residence. It can be a small business or an entire shopping mall. There is great personal satisfaction to be found in this career path in interior design.
