The types of bed usually available for children are options such as bunk bed or single beds that you can get as either divans or bedsteads. If space is limited you can get midisleeper beds with either play space or storage under. For sleepovers or siblings bunk beds are a great option. There are a number of specialist beds that are available such as water or air beds as well as character beds but these need careful consideration before use.

It is particularly important for young children to get a good night's sleep. It is a vital part of their growth and development, a time for their bodies to rest and grow and their brains to assimilate the information of the day. Children of 3 to 4 years of age need on average 11 to 12 hours of sleep and children of over 5 years need from 10 hours of sleep a night. A child who sleeps well at night also makes for a happier, more relaxed parent so getting the right bed is a crucial stop in ensuring a happy bedtime.

If you are often having friends or relations round to stay or you have more than one child and space is limited you may find that bunk beds are the best option for you. Bunk beds are only suitable for children of 6 and over. Take a look at the styles of bunk beds available, some just have ladders but others include handrails so you need to consider what would suit your child best. If you want to keep your opinions open for the future then look for bunk beds that can also be used separately.

A standard single bed is a good option for a young child's bed, if you choose an appropriate style it can last right into their teens. There are two main options divans or bedsteads. Bedsteads are frames and can come in a range of styles and colours as well as materials. You can get some with sliding storage doors underneath, known as divans; these can be useful for extra storage space.

You can also get a midisleeper bed these come in a range of styles, they can either come with storage units included or they can be open underneath which will give you the flexibility to use it as you want. These generally come with steps or ladders to get onto the bed, as although they are higher than a standard bed they are not as big as a bunk.

There are some more specialist types available that you could consider, such as water or air beds, but these aren't suitable for children to use on a long term basis. If you child suffers from health problems or debilitating back pain then you might want to consider an orthopaedic bed. You can also get a children's character bed in particular designs, related to favourite characters or motifs. These might be useful for children who are having difficulty making the transition to a bed but they also may grow out of them quickly.

Take into account the type of mattress that you can get with the divans or bed of your choice. A different mattress can make a big difference, for example you may want an anti-allergy mattress. There is also a wide range of mattress types to choose from but not all beds necessarily take a standard mattress size, so the choice of a less common type of bed may reduce your choice of mattress.

Getting the right bed or divans for your child is as important for you as it is for them. You may want to get them involved in the decision but you should consider that they may change their mind! A flexible approach may be best especially if you want the bed to last a long time. In this case you will want to opt for a classic design. It is always best to take your time and consider all the options whether you are looking at divans, bunk beds or others.
