In June of 2007, the government put debt review into effect to help those suffering financial difficulties. Almost every individual has some payments to make in the form of rent and utilities, plus transportation and groceries. When the outgoing amounts are higher than the incoming amounts, it can lead to disaster.

There are counselors registered with the government to provide services for these people. You will need to gather and present certain information to allow the counselor to determine your eligibility. Facts such as income, monthly expenses and how much you owe your creditors are some of the information that is required. Unless you are deemed over indebted, your application is going to be denied.

For those who qualify for the help, the counselor writes up a restructuring proposal. This is delivered to the creditors. You will be asking for reductions in your monthly obligations. If you are required to pay less, it will enable you to live decently and manage to pay off the debts as well.

The creditors will no longer be able to harass you for money after accepting the proposal. You are protected from legal action. You will no longer be in danger of losing any of your assets. Your only obligation will be to make the payments listed in the restructuring proposal.

Unfortunately, you must get rid of all existing credit cards until all bills are paid. You may not apply for credit of any type until that time. Also, it takes longer to clear up old debts using this plan.

Be aware that not all debt review counselors are registered with the government. Check for those credentials before engaging one to help you with your application. If sending financial information over the internet, make sure the company uses encryption to safeguard it. The counselor who is registered abides by rules set up to protect the debtor. If you are an individual who is deeply in debt and not expecting to be able to improve your situation, look for a counselor to help you to overcome this temporary difficulty.
