Making wine has become an art form over the years and those people that get it just right are deservedly lauded the world over. One of the most distinguished practices around can prove to be extremely lucrative and some of the following wine producers are considered by many to be among the leading lights in the drink industry.
As every fan of wine knows, picking favourites is no mean feat. There are so many that stand out. Wine tasting is a very complex and subjective pastime, so it is impossible to choose wines that will satisfy everybody's palate. The following, therefore, is a short list of very high quality wines that we hope you love or will come to love.
First up is the Villa Maria Wines . This family-owned winery is the most decorated in New Zealand, consistently winning international awards for the quality of its wines for over thirty years. One of the finest wines to come out of this vineyard is the Syrah, which is enjoying a growing reputation around the world. Its intensity leaves a lasting impression, with bursts of plum and black pepper complemented by hints of violets throughout. Villa Maria's Sauvignon Blanc is a real treat for the taste buds, too, with strong flavours of gooseberry and passion fruit swimming through it.
From New Zealand, we head to the northern hemisphere and to the Chateau La Lagune . Situated in one of the most celebrated wine regions and only a few miles from Bordeaux in France, La Lagune knows how to produce wines of real quality. In fact, they've been doing it for three centuries now and are renowned for their oaky wines that age to perfection over time. A range that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot produces plenty of hints of toffee, vanilla and spices.
Over the border from France is another prolific and popular wine region, namely, Italy. Despite the fact there are so many excellent producers of wine in this particular part of Europe, one vineyard that deserves high praise is Antinori of Florence. A couple of classic wines to have emerged from these vineyards are the Solaia and Tignanello, which arguably must rank as the most famous drop produced by the winery. Tuscany is also renowned for its Chianti Classico wines and Antinori has been producing them since the 14th century.
Then we come to Rioja, a mainstay on every world-class wine list. La Rioja Alta has two wineries in the region and produces a wonderful combination of new and old. Tempranillo, the main grape on the vineyards here, has been joined recently by Garnacha and Graciano and the major thing to note about Rioja wines are the tannins and aromatic fruits that combine to leave a delightful aftertaste.
Boschendal is a winery that has been in operation since the 17th century in South Africa and is a familiar name to wine buffs the world over. Blending old world charm with new world elegance, Boschendal produces fresh, flavoursome and fruity wines with ripe flavours.
Last but not least, Australia's Penfolds Grange has a reputation that speaks for itself. For over a century and a half, it has been producing some of the best first growth wines in the world by sourcing its grapes from some of Australia's richest vineyards. Consequently, it boasts a diverse range of grapes from Grenache in the McLaren Vale vineyard to Sangiovese in the Barossa Valley vineyard.
