Failing to install a lock, of adequate quality places the possessions within a home and the safety of those who dwell in it at risk. There are many locks that claim to provide above-average security that fails when put to the test. When it comes to door locks for homes and businesses, the homeowner has many options. The decision requires that certain qualities be taken into account. It is therefore important for the security conscious homeowner to research the devices upon which the safety of their dwelling-place rests.

The qualities of different types of locks, spring latch locks are common and very affordable. They can be easily defeated using something other than the key to pull back the bolt, which is spring operated. They can be found in most hardware stores and they provide security but only the most basic type. They are useful for ensuring privacy, but not against intruders.

The first of the better options is the deadbolt, in which the bolt is not spring-loaded and therefore "dead". These double cylinder locks are most commonly seen doors with glass panes and are there to prevent a potential intruder from breaking the glass and reaching in to turn a latch. There are single and double cylinder deadbolts, with the double cylinder ones requiring that a key be used on both sides of the door.

Most types of deadbolt offer some resistance to the intruder, but there are also notable vulnerabilities present in the various designs. The vast majority of forced entries are of the kick-in variety and the frail construction of the locks renders them vulnerable to this. Strong, high quality locks do exist, however, and these can be found by those who are willing to invest in the security of their home or business and put in the time comparing products or by consulting with a locksmith. A simple cordless drill used to remove the cylinder, or a kick, is all it takes to defeat many deadbolt locks.

The strike plate is one of the areas in which the locks are vulnerable. In many cases how these are installed can make a difference how the construction holds up to a forceful attempt to break it. The strike plate is the part of the lock that fits in the door jam and holds the bolt. Choosing a lock with a strong strike plate that has been installed with screws of sufficient length, can make the difference between a successful burglary attempted and a failed one.
