Estrogen is natural or synthetic substances formed by the ovary, placenta, testis, and certain plants, that stimulate the female secondary sex characteristics, exert systemic effects such as the growth and maturation of long bones, and are used to treat disorders due to estrogen deficiency and to ameliorate cancers of the breast and prostate. Female hormone produced by the ovaries and released by the follicles as they mature. Responsible for female sexual characteristics, estrogen stimulates and triggers a response from at least 300 tissues, and may help some types of breast cancer to grow. Estrogens increase the amount of calcium absorbed from the stomach. This interaction is used to help women with osteoporosis to increase their calcium levels.

After menopause, the production of the hormone gradually stops. Human estrogen level is elaborated in the ovaries, adrenal cortices, testes, and fetoplacental unit. During the menstrual cycle, estrogen renders the female genital tract suitable for fertilization, implantation, and nutrition of the early embryo. Pharmaceutic preparations of estrogen are used in oral contraceptives to prevent pregnancy, palliate certain types of postmenopausal breast cancer and prostatic cancer, inhibit lactation, and treat threatened abortion and ovarian disease. There are six different estrogenic substances that have been identified in women, but only 3 are actually present in large amounts: estrone, estradiol, and estriol and their imbalance causes many problems such as lupus erythematosis, thyroiditis, and Sjoegren's ,Breast cancer ,Breast tenderness ,Cervical dysplasia ,Cold hands and feet. Estrogen hormone replacement therapy is used to increase estrogen levels in postmenopausal women who have no uterus.

Estrogen hormone replacement therapy can help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, and vaginal dryness. Estrogen can also prevent bone loss that leads to thin, weak bones (osteoporosis). HRT may help prevent other diseases such as colon cancer and macular degeneration (age-related vision loss), The benefits of Estrogen hormone replacement therapy are not yet fully known and understood, there are Estrogen hormone replacement therapy side effects too and much remains to be learned about the differing effects of ERT and HRT in their various formulations. For example, oral and transdermal estrogens have somewhat different effects because of the way the estrogen enters the body. More research is needed to clarify these effects.

HRT may help prevent other diseases such as colon cancer and macular degeneration Estrogen hormone replacement therapy side effects are also associated such as increased risk of endometrial cancer in women with a uterus if estrogen is taken without progesterone or a progestin. Another common Estrogen hormone replacement therapy side effect is that is increases breast density, making mammograms more difficult to interpret and possibly increasing breast cancer risk. This appears to be an effect primarily associated with taking oral progestin continuously with estrogen (e.g., PremPro).

Another Estrogen hormone replacement therapy side effect associated with oral estrogen treatments which is slightly increased risk of heart attack or stroke, both in women with cardiovascular disease and in healthy women. This effect may be associated primarily with HRT using continuous combined oral estrogen and progestin (PremPro) or the daily use of an oral progestin such as Provera with estrogen. Estrogens have been reported to increase the risk of endometrial cancer in postmenopausal women taking them for prolonged periods.
