If you are a dog owner you have certainly smelled the less than pleasant odor of the pet. The phrase "you smell like a dog" was probably coined because of the fact that no amount of good grooming will remove the distinct doggie smell. Dog owners must accustom themselves to the smell that is used by the dog to identify one another as no amount of grooming can remove this natural dog odor. Pet owners are often heard complaining about the smell of the dog. But wouldn't you think that living with a pet that smells would just be a fair trade off for all the perks you get from owning a dog?

Dogs are highly valued as these loyal pets also provide the owners with affection and empathy. A pet dog can listen to your troubles and would provide you with unconditional love. But how can you hug a pet if the abhorrent smell would linger in your clothes? Don't fret - you can still hug and kiss your pet as there are ways to get rid of the dog's unpleasant odor.

Filth is the most common reason for the dog's abhorrent smell. Being a dog owner you would know that the pet enjoys rolling in rotting animals, swimming in stagnant water and raiding trash cans to eat spoiled food. To get rid of the unpleasant smell you simply need to bathe the dog. Human shampoos are harmful to animals thus you have to bathe the dog with warm water and dog shampoo.

Make sure that the soap or the shampoo is thoroughly rinsed before drying the coat with a towel or a hair dryer. A coat that remains damp would be a good place for smell causing bacteria to thrive. Dog experts do not recommend too frequent bathing as it removes the natural oils and dries up the skin of the dog. To get rid of the dog smell that can develop in between bathing, you can use pet powders that will give the pet sweet fresh smell.

Dried feces on the dog's rear end and other smelly objects that clings to the fur can be the reason for the dog's horrible smell. Regular grooming is one good way of removing dog odor. To get rid of the dog smell grooming should also include trimming the hair on the anal area. A dog owner will find it difficult to get rid of the dog smell that is associated with medical concerns. Impacted anal gland, ear infection, periodontal diseases that give the dog bad breath are possible causes for the dog's unpleasant smell.
