It will not take up a lot of space in order to install Portable Electric Heaters, and that is why they are also referred to as small space heaters. This type of heater is usually seen in places where it is too costly to use central heating or where people find that additional heating is needed. In most cases, they are used to heat only individual rooms.

It will also be cost effective if you need it only to supplement for inadequate heating in a single room. Most of the time, they are used to boost the heat in a room people sensitive to the cold use without wasting energy by overheating the whole house. Therefore, it is preferred in many homes where there are elderly people.

This type of heater usually comes in capacities ranging from 10,000 BTU to 40,000BTU. They run on many fuel types but most of them are seen running on electricity. Then, there are the ones that run on propane, kerosene, and natural gas as well.

Most if these devices work using convection, meaning the air circulating in the room, but some depend on radiant heating also. The ones that use radiant heating emit infrared radiation, which will heat people and objects the rays come into contact with. They are the better choice if you do not stay in the specific room for long and are able to stay directly in sight of the device.

The fact that the radiant heater does not heat the air and heats only the objects in a room is the very reason it consumes lesser amounts of energy to function. However, the safety concerns regarding small space heaters, in general, are high. Fire hazard is high with a heater running on kerosene or gas compared to others that run on electricity.

The Commission for Consumer Product Safety in the US estimates that, every year, more than 25,000 house fires with around 300 deaths are the result of the misuse of heating equipment. Additionally, almost 6,000 people receive emergency treatment in hospitals because of burn injuries coming from contact with hot surfaces of heating equipment. Most of them do not report a fire either.

Before getting a new portable heater installed or replacing your existing one, you should consider some facts. Only the newest Portable Electric Heaters have improved safety features. Also, the heater should be sufficient to heat the room. Too little and the room will not get warm and too much will waste energy.
