Know What's Private And Keep It That Way
Redundant as it may sound, this is the most important rule many people disregard. You can post 'What's on your mind' on Facebook wall and virtually anything you want to say. Even so, remember that posting these things may turn out to be a big blunder on your part. Do you really want your clients see you puking on your Friday night gimmicks? Or is that catty statement that was meant to be an inside joke between friends worth the misinterpretation by others? Realize that whatever that's learned about you online can have a lasting impact. Your personal or professional contacts may see these at some point if not today. If your life is like an open book, just imagine the problem of you having to explain to them each and every action you made in the past.
When Using Facebook for Business, Stop Publishing those Game Updates
Unless you're in middle school, getting those messy game updates will tend to frustrate prospective customers. If you admit that you play these games, well, at least don't have the updates posted on your wall. Posting the game updates may not be a big deal for you and your 'Farmville' neighbors. But for your potential customers, these may label you as unprofessional or even irresponsible. That's a big no-no when you're trying to establish strong expertise online.
- Stop Text Posting or Posting when it's not necessary
'Prty lst nyt ws frikin awesme!!!' doesn't look so good in your business page, does it? You're not posting updates on Twitter which is limited to only 150 words so why scrimp your words? Text posting may turn off your potential clients and customers as it sounds a bit too amateurish. The same goes for drunk posting, posting gibberish or something too vague. And you don't always have to follow Facebook's prompt 'What's On Your Mind?' Although everyone is entitled to their own bit of cyberspace, these things have a tendency to get one other people's nerves in the long run. Irritation is not the sentiment you want to conjure up in people.
- Choose Contacts Wisely
Don't forget that all your posts will appear on their news feeds. Their other Facebook friends can even see these posts in many occasions. So stop being trigger happy and reserve your friend requests to those who you think are really deserving of it. Direct contacts are ideal. You only have a 5,000 limit for contacts after all. If you're keeping a Facebook page for professional reasons, then do not accept friend requests right away. Doing a little bit of research may do your business page good. You can un-friend some people later on after finding out that they aren't within your target audience.
