It's time to get back to basics this season in winter menswear, with a trusted pair of designer jeans.

The denim jean is unquestionably the staple item of a wardrobe - anyone will tell you that, but finding the right pair can be an absolute nightmare. In designer men's fashion jeans are an instant giveaway as to the kind of person you are; your music taste, and the kind of lifestyle you participate in. There is a huge selection of cuts and designs to choose from, some which everyone will love, and others which are not to everyone's liking.

More conventional modes in men's fashion look to the straight leg to compliment most wardrobes. The Swedish stylings of Our Legacy bring their attention to detail and contemporary/classic blend to denim with their Authentic Mid-Wash jeans, French Connection get lean and mean with their Dark Raw jeans, Dolce & Gabbana go back to black, while Italian denim kings Diesel, show off their vast collection of straight legs including Fraceex with deep pocket detail, distressed panels of the Larkee and the fitted Braddom's.

Bootcut jeans are flattering for athletic and muscly bodies, as they fit well on the hip and encompass space for shoes. True Religion's Billy jean pockets are outlined with hem stitch; Indigo by Gap are another one to watch; Paul Smith hark back to retro, and Wrangler offer their fail-safe Miles style, which are designed to last.

Slim fits look to a more athletic and streamline physique with straight hip shapes such as Nudie Jeans Thin Finn or Grim Tim, Edwin or YMC's Selvedge range, Won Hundred's Dean Slim series and the Scandinavian smart of cutting-edge label Norse Projects and their Three Raw Denim jeans. Skinny fits mould better to the same body shape but taper in line from hip to ankle. A popular shaping for the past few seasons, skinny fit jeans adapt to a number of different trends including preppy when teamed with cardigans and plimsoles or nautical when matched with ankle boots and cable knits. Prime examples come from Cheap Monday, All Saints, Levis Vintage and J. Lindeberg.

There are of course other shapes and styles - let's not forget the dropped crotch by Humor, Replay, and DND. Then there is the twisted by Gio Goi, Energie, and Fly 53; slipping down from the waist and tapering at the ankle, is the more unusual 'carrot' design by Denham, Vivienne Westwood, and Stone Island. If those styles don't float your boat then colour might be something you could vary when picking out your next pair of denim strides. DSquared2, PRPS, Lee, and G Star offer a subtle hue variation through distressing their denim; Acne's Snake slims are canary yellow bright if standing out is your thing; red is bold and beautiful at Monkey Genes; People's Market's Electronica Slim and Paul Smith's Tapered Twill lend their vote to purple, while Humor and KSUBI Kolors do what they say on the tin and offer the whole spectrum - quite literally!
