Meribel - A Snowboarder's Paradise

For most of us, when we believe of a winter ski vacation, we assume of a ski chalet in the French or Swiss Alps. Sadly, for the traveler on a spending budget, the words "alps" and "low-cost" don't necessarily go hand in hand. But that does not mean you have to give up the fresh mountain air altogether. It just may possibly mean deciding upon a distinct mountain top rated, like the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia.

When I initially saw the sign on the hostel cork-board in Poland, I didn't assume it was doable myself. A day pass, plus accommodations and gear rental for much less than 35 Euros? I can not even get a single day pass right here in the states for much less than 50 dollars a day, (which is about the equivalent, not which includes accommodation, rentals, or something else.)

So as any avid snowboarder would do in search of low-cost powder, I hopped on a bus to the border of Poland and Slovakia and headed to the modest village of Zdiar, high in the Tatra mountain range.

As soon as I crossed the border from Poland, I began to take in the gorgeous mountain views on my brief bus ride to the modest village. With quite a few ski resorts that service the region and a host of summer activities when the snow has melted such as rafting, horse back riding and paragliding, I started to feel correct at dwelling to the Rocky mountains back in Utah.

A regular Slovic timber home proper in the center of the village (which had dorm rooms as well as private rooms starting at 12 euros per night) and cozied up with a hot cup of tea as they began to arrange my gear rental for my stay (for 5 euros a day, offering a cheaper rate for longer term rentals.) They also geared me up with some snow pants and gloves for a nominal price tag to make confident I was ready for the components.) The village had a couple of possibilities for dining from a excellent pizza joint, to much more traditional Slovic cuisine beginning at about five euros,
