Planning licenses for various expansion schemes has been denied 17 separate times sinces the 1960s at Henrietta Barnett School, in the bosom of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. Hopkins Architects and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust assisted the school to eventually complete the redevelopment at the 18th try with a 7.75 million extension programme, in 2011.
At the Grade II Listed building, designed by renowned British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, four new schoolroom blocks totalling 1,100m2 have been designed to be sympathetic to the initial buildings and encompassing areas. The new building was topped with 45,000 Traditional clay roofing tiles in Elizabethan colour, all supplied by hand made clay roof tile specialist Keymer, to uphold architectural integrity and emulate the original Lutyens design.
Hopkins Architects carried out extensive consultations with selected stakeholders throughout the design process - including Barnet Planning Authority, English Heritage and the Lutyens Trust, to make certain the expansion met the highest standards and received planning permission. Hopkins' re-organised the existing buildings so that the final proposal featured a significantly reduced extension compared to previous schemes, with the new building totalling just 1,100m2.
After talks with the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust, Keymer tiles proved to be the only roofing solution that met all of the aesthetic and architectural demands of the steeply pitched tiled roof.
"Keymer handmade tiles were ideal at Henrietta Barnett School. For colour, texture and overall aesthetic, machine made tiles did not meet the required standards. That is why the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust, along with Hopkins Architects, insisted Keymer Traditional handmade roof tiles were used on this unique and historical school development." said David Davidson, Architectural Adviser at Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust.
The Keymer Traditional tile is a real handmade British clay roofing tile that has its own inimitable manner. Presenting variations in colour, texture and shape that cannot be replicated, every tile weathers naturally to look better and improve with every passing year which made them the ideal selection at Henrietta Barnett School.
Keymer's Traditional handmade clay tiles are hand tested to assure all tiles meet with the company's demanding level of quality, and are sanctioned by BSI British Standards and accredited to EN ISO 9002, the highest official standard in quality.
The Traditional tiles will age with a natural beauty that makes sure they look better with every year that passes. The art, drama and music departments at Henrietta Barnett School will benefit from the Keymer aesthetic for generations to come as only a genuine handmade clay tile can offer such an aesthetic.
